Introducing You To The Speedy Tuesday Magazine

The G-Timeless Sport watch dials look like a collaboration between a traditional Rolex Submariner and a Gucci handbag. It does actually work in the end though the hands are too short - but not so short as to kill the design. I am pretty sure "Gucci Sport" is also a perfume collection. If not, then maybe it should be and could be part of the packaging. Think about it. You get a brand new G-Timeless Sport, and when you open the box you pull the timepiece out of a pool of Gucci Sport fragrance. Not only does the watch prove itself as a diver, but it retains the scent of Italian musk for at least a week or two. Now you're talking... They need to hire me over in product marketing.

When it comes to functionality, the watch does tell the time of course. The lights come up to display the time using two “painted” analog hands. Given the nature of the creation, the Eco-Drive Nova watch doesn’t even center them in the middle of the dial. The playful concept creation is a fun toy first, and a watch second. Citizen likely uses a special display combined with a type of fiber optic light source to create the impressive effect.

What is different about JLC in comparison to even many of its sister companies is just how much of a manufacture they are. We are talking a place where movement parts, movement assembly, cases, hands, and dials are made. JLC really makes a lot more "watch" than most people are used to.

Wearability is high if you like the look of a large all-black timepiece. There is a handsome masculinity to the design that I feel should appeal to a lot of people out there. Dial design is rather straight forward and a bit vintage looking. The utilitarian feel is marked by large Arabic hour numerals and a smaller 24 hour scale.

Hublot as a brand has evolved from a small Swiss brand that was barely known, into a hugely popular manufacturer that counts the likes of Diego Maradona and Usain Bolt as its ambassadors. It is impossible to claim that this was not thanks to the efforts of Jean-Claude Biver and his team. So design, function, and even product aside, why has one of the biggest luxury brands of the moment commissioned a pair of unique watches especially for Marcus?

The dial is all about Italian aesthetic simplicity. I wish the press release was as well. In a glossy black lacquer, the dial has applied gold or steel hour indicators and hands. It instantly mimics the look we have seen in some other Bulgari timepieces. This is an excellent mixture of Gerald Genta and Bulgari DNA. I am further amused and impressed by the over two pages Bulgari's marketing department spent waxing poetic on not the number eight, but rather things with eight sides... and how historically meaningful and awesome they are. If you will allow me a moment to share something truly meaningful, here is a moving excerpt from their love note to the Octa, "More than a watch, the object transcends its pure function to acquire a broad dimension brimming with aesthetic and emotional significance. Its apparent formal simplicity carries a substantial complexity by conveying a wealth of values: equilibrium, perfection, immortality and eternity on the one hand, expertise and horological mastery on the other." I think I know who I want writing my wedding vows.

For the dial, Rado chose a unique route. The watch face itself is petite at best, residing in the center of the dial with lots of empty space above and below it. While it is smaller in comparison to the rest of the dial, the watch face is legible and well done in Rado fashion. Note that the little Rado anchor logo actually moves around like a small rotor. Inside the watch is a rarely used movement which is the Swiss ETA 2094 automatic chronograph. Think of it as a smaller version of the 2894 chronograph. You can see the movement through the caseback window with a custom Rado automatic rotor.

Titanium is such a good material that its usage is still increasing in fighter aircraft. For instance the F-22 utilizes more titanium than any western aircraft ever did. Its biggest competitor as a material is Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and we will cover that in another article.

The T-Touch Classic case is in steel and is 42mm wide with a 20mm wide strap or bracelet. The crystal is sapphire and the case is rated to be water resistant to 100 meters. The look of the watches is quite nice and Tissot has once again offered an excellent high-function watch suitable for daily wear. Most T-Touch watches are very sporty in their style, so this Classic model offers a fresh departure for a new audience of watch lovers wishing for the same functionality. Price for the Tissot T-Touch Classic is 5 on the leather strap and 5 on the steel bracelet. Look for them in Fall 2012.

Ulysse Nardin did a good job making the case interesting, but not too strange. Completely polished, the finishing is well-done and the little details on the case prevent it from being boring. The proprietary strap connection on the lugs forces you to buy only Ulysse Nardin straps, but you could argue it is worth the unique look. It is even easy to appreciate the detailing put into the crown guard and the crown with its applied UN logo. On the other side of the case are two ceramic pushers and a serial number plate. While this is not a limited edition watch, Ulysse Nardin likes to personalize each piece with a plate containing its unique serial number.

While at Baselworld 2012, I had an interesting idea. It wasn’t totally unique, and I certainly didn’t come up with it originally. I did however stumble upon a solution for a huge problem with the watch industry and a great way to solve it. Something that to my knowledge isn’t really being done with any seriousness today. It has to do with getting more people to wear and want watches, and how to approach a post need-based watch economy.

Surprisingly this is not the first watch Jaeger-LeCoultre made for a Batman movie. A very similar limited edition Reverso watch was made several years ago when Batman Forever was released. The press release from Jaeger-LeCoultre isn't clear on how many pieces will be made or where they will be available. However, it does hint to the fact that they should be in Jaeger-LeCoultre brand boutiques in Los Angeles, London, Geneva, and Hong Kong.

Like all Rolexes, the movement is in-house and for this version, contains the Rolex Parachrom hairspring which is supposed to be better at resisting the negative effects of magnetic fields and thus keeping an accurate beat over the years.  The sapphire crystal has some of the best anti-reflective coating (AR) I have ever seen on a watch.  This makes the bezel visible at even the thinnest of angles…
